Mehr als 60% aller Israelis fürchten um die Demokratie

In Israel spitzt sich der Konflikt zwischen Regierung einerseits, Geheimdienstchef und oberster Richterin anderseits seit Tagen zu. Nachdem das Kabinett über die vorzeitige die Entlassung von Shin Bet Chef Ronen Bar abgestimmt hat, soll Sonntag über die von der Leiterin des Obersten Gerichts Gali Baharav-Miara entschieden werden.

Laut Umfragen sehen deshalb eine Mehrheit aller Israelis die Demokratie in Gefahr, während der ehemalige oberste Richter, Aharon Barak, in einem Interview sogar vor der Gefahr eines Bürgerkrieges warnte.

Nearly two-thirds of Israelis fear for the country’s democracy, according to a new poll published Friday, a day after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government voted to fire Shin Bet chief Ronen Bar.

Asked if they were afraid for the future of Israeli democracy, 63 percent of respondents to the Channel 12 poll said yes, 33% said no and 4% said they didn’t know.

Among people who voted for parties in government, the figures were 37%, 60% and 3% respectively. (...)

Another recent poll, conducted by Reichman University’s Institute for Liberty and Responsibility, indicated that 44% of the public had faith in the Supreme Court and 43% had faith in the attorney general, as opposed to just 17% who had faith in the government.
