Protest gegen Assad Statue

Syrien wir von der Familie Assad regiert, die quasi einen Besitzanspruch auf das Land hat. So kann sie es auch beliebig zerstören lassen, wenn Syrerinnen und Syrer sich diesem Anspruch widersetzen. Entsprechend standen auch überall überlebensgroße Statuen von Vater und Sohn Assad, hängen überall ihre Konterfeis. Gegen Statuen und Bilder richtete sich entsprechend seit 2011 der Unmut der Demonstranten, wo immer möglich wurden sie gestürzt oder zerstört.

Erobert das Regime ein Gebiet zurück, das von der Opposition gehalten wurde, gilt es den eigenen Machtanspruch mit Wiedererrichtung der Statuen zu zementieren. Nur stößt das keineswegs auf Begeisterung. In Dera'a etwa trauten sich sogar Hunderte zu demonstrieren:

Hundreds of Syrians in the city of Deraa protested Sunday at the erection of a new statue of President Bashar Assad's late father, nearly eight years after the original was toppled at the start of Syria's civil war.

Demonstrators and witnesses said residents walked through the streets of the war-ravaged old quarter of the city calling for Assad's overthrow, days before the eighth anniversary of the start of the conflict.

Deraa was where peaceful protests against 40 years of autocratic Assad family rule began in 2011, and were met by deadly force, before spreading across the country.
